Women's World of Boxing, NYC Empowering PowerPlayNYC's SuperSTARS Leadership Academy 2016 Girls Through The Sport of Boxing
PowerPlayNYC is dedicated to inspiring and educating girls through one-of-a-kind sports and academic enrichment programs, which is why it was an honor on July 7, 2016 to partner once again with their PowerPlay’s SuperSTARS Leadership Academy (SSLA) year-long youth development program!
As the 50+ girls arrived at the gym, I was bombarded with questions by the regulars at the gym, "There's SO many of them and only one of you, how are you going to wrap all of their hands!? How are you going to teach all of those girls by yourself!? How did you get all of these girls here!?"
Honestly, I was just so excited to work with PowerPlayNYC again that I hadn't really thought about it, until they all started filing in! I panicked for about 3 seconds (maybe 5...) It was the largest group that I've worked with and in those 5 seconds (okay maybe 10...) for the first time in a very long time, I felt like I was standing alone.
As the girls came in and circled around me, their excitement and eagerness to learn in some way, calmed my spirit and made it very clear to me that I was not alone at all. They had arrived in my second home to learn from me, I from them, and we were there together. It was no longer a me and them, we had become an us.
I began by teaching the girls how to wrap their hands. The ones who got it, helped me help the ones that didn't. There was no hesitation on either side. I believe that if you need help, you should ask for it, humbly receive it, and then do your best to help someone else in need. It was great to witness the girls who needed help, welcome the assistance from their peers who immediately stepped in to assist other girls in need. That is how all things should be. There is no shame in either and it is a testament of their character, leadership and PowerPlayNYC community.
In our short time together, they learned how to wrap their hands, how to find the proper boxing stance, their jab and cross, how to hit the heavy bag, and a little about me and why I do what I do.
It was an AMAZING day and I hope that I had as much of an impact upon them as they had on me. They are the next generation of leaders, educators, influencers and fighters. I sincerely thank them for sharing their time, focus, energy, and I look forward to seeing these strong girls become strong women.
Thank You PowerPlayNYC Summer Leadership Academy 2016!
